LEARN Local Food in Wartime: Pupils meet older people who were self-sufficient during World War II and they visit Archives to see ‘Dig for Victory’ promotional materials. Participants design ‘Local Food’ posters, working in teams. Caplor Farm selects a winning entry to be professionally printed for a resource pack. Meet the Experts: The children walk to Hereford market. They find out how local food is packaged, weighed and sold. They take notes/ photographs. Pupils walk to a city allotment, to meet gardeners. They see what is possible on a small site. Pupils visit Penrhos Court, where the produce grown in the gardens is on the restaurant menu. Chef Daphne Lambert runs a hands-on cooking session. GROW Keeping it local: Pupils plant/ tend fruit and vegetables in the school grounds. They keep notes and take pictures. HARVEST/ SHARE Pupils plan a celebration meal for local elderly people, using their own grown produce. Chef Lambert helps them to plan an uncomplicated but delicious menu and is also on-hand on cooking day. Invited guests take part in garden tours and tastings. The children spend a day with a journalist and a graphic designer to plan a resource pack to be sent to every Herefordshire school. Explaining how to replicate the project, the pack contains advice, tips and images, plus a free poster and a pack of seeds.
