An award winning social enterprise is bringing a touch of rural life back to inner city Sheffield by transforming eight acres (3.2 hectares) of land into an urban farm. Green Estate, are working towards improving the open spaces of the deprived wards of Manor, Castle and Woodthorpe.

Sowing Seeds’ is a holistic project in London that integrates weekly gardening lessons with the provision of related recipe and nutrition cards to refugees. It is a new allotment-based project which builds on the success of healthy eating classes delivered by the Refugee Council since January 2008.

Community interest group, Stroudco is going to provide local food to local people in Stroud through a project called ‘Better Deal- Affordable Local Food for Local People’. This social enterprise will be controlled by the community that use it.

Medina Housing Association will be engaging 150 new households on the Isle of Wight into their Growing Spaces project to encourage residents to grow their own vegetables, thanks to a £90,000 grant funded by Local Food. Local Food is a new grants programme supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

Bath Place Community Cafe will be helping young people to eat and cook healthily. The ‘FLAVA’ (Food, Learning and Voluntary Action) project will see the introduction of the Kiddie Kafe which will be managed by young people (aged 8-14) for young people. The participants will be involved in planning, preparing and cooking healthy food for sale.

Due to an exceptional high level of demand, the groundbreaking Local Food programme is to suspend acceptance of new first stage applications, with effect from Friday 21 August 2009.

Manchester residents can show their appreciation to local farmers this Valentine’s day, and at the same time become healthier and greener with the help of a pocket-sized seasonal food calendar. Ten thousand of the conveniently sized and informative calendars will be available free of charge at selected fruit & vegetable outlets across Manchester from Valentine’s Day.

Local children will be getting their hands dirty after a thriving children’s charity has secured a £90,000 grant from Local Food.

A.P.P.L.E., based in Acton, West London is the first organisation in the capital to receive funding from the £50 million Local Food Programme which will be funding food related community projects right across the country.

A local Dudley school has been cooking up a storm after being awarded £10,000 by Local Food, a new grants programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

The funding has enabled Castle High School to introduce an after school cooking club which is educating pupils and parents about the merits of healthy cooking.
