Sowing Seeds
12 October 2009
‘Sowing Seeds’ will benefit refugees living in Hounslow, many of whom are at the end of a lengthy asylum process and have no entitlements to training or employment. Individuals receive limited or no financial support and face significant barriers to eating healthily.
Through the project the aim is to improve the clients’ physical and mental health through access to affordable, fresh local food in a safe and supportive environment. The project helps tackle malnutrition and obesity and equips participants with the skills and confidence to grow their own vegetables, and the knowledge to make informed food choices.
Strong links have been forged with Groundwork and Capel Manor Horticultural College who have provided project development advice and support and will continue to be active in the delivery of the project. Capel Manor will deliver a 1-day customised training in growing techniques.
Farida Stanikzai the manager of the project explains clearly the objectives of this activity. Emphasising that it is not just about growing food but that many refugees suffer from social isolation:
“The new allotment gives refugees a chance to socialise, make new friends, do gardening, relax and enjoy spending time outdoors in the fresh air, looking at greenery and the beautiful colours of the nature around them.”
An annual food celebration event and a photography exhibition organised by Watermans Art Centre will create meaningful encounters between local and refugee communities and will promote community cohesion through increased understanding of the experiences of our clients.
