Not only is this task large, but it is also hard to make these initiatives work, and be financially viable in the long term.

Three Cheshire schools have been getting their fingers dirty and growing their own grub, thanks to a £9,000 grant from Local Food.
Hinderton School, Ellesmere Port, Dorin Park School, Chester and Springfield School, Crewe, have all created their very own customised growing areas for the pupils and the wider community to learn about food growing and horticultural skills.
An innovative Local Food project based in Merseyside has won the special 2010 Year of Health and Wellbeing category in the Merseyside Innovation Awards.

Local Food project ‘Growing Spaces’ has won a prestigious award.
The project, run by Medina Housing Association was announced as winner of the South East region for the ‘What We Are Proud Of’ awards from the National Housing Federation, which celebrate the exciting work that is going on in local communities.
Waiting lists for allotments in Bodmin and surrounding villages have been cut thanks to a £8,700 grant from Local Food, the £50 million funding programme supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

The programme funds a range of activities from local food schemes and farmers markets, to education projects teaching people about the local environment.
