Local Food
Feeding the growth of local communities
Local Food is a £50 million programme that will distribute grants to a variety of food-related projects which will help make locally grown food accessible to local communities.
Local Food has been developed by a consortium of organisations and is managed on their behalf by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT). The programme will run until December 2014, with all projects having to be completed by March 2014.
Themes
Local Food has five main themes under which a range of projects can be supported:
Growing food locally
Allowing people the opportunity to grow food locally
Celebrating cultural diversity
Enabling communities to build knowledge and understanding of the cultural diversity of food
Social enterprise
Stimulating local economic activity through the development of social enterprises related to local food
Skills and learning
Creating opportunities for learning through volunteering, training and job creation
Healthy eating, healthy living
Promoting awareness of the links between food and healthy lifestyles.
Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT)
As well as operating at a national level to support the work of the 47 local Wildlife Trusts, RSWT has a dedicated Grants Unit that manages several different funds, covering a broad environmental theme. The Unit does this on behalf of other organisations, such as the Big Lottery Fund and Biffa Waste Services.
The Local Food Consortium
Big Lottery Fund
Local Food is part of the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces programme which was launched in November 2005 to help communities enjoy and improve their local environments. The programme funds a range of activities from local food schemes and farmers markets, to education projects teaching people about the local environment.
