Hello there, I'm Wendy Skinner Smith!
Cripley Meadow, like its neighbour Port Meadow, is an ancient flood meadow. It has been laid out as allotments since 1891 but, like many other sites, it became very neglected and overgrown with trees, brambles and accumulated rubbish during the last 30 years of the 20thC. We started reclaiming Cripley Meadow in 2005 and now have a thriving, busy site with over 260 members. Since 2008, after much hard work, we have turned the tide on the lack of cultivation. We have accommodated many new members and have managed a waiting list. We took on developing Cripley Island Orchard as a communal activity for our members with Local Food funding and have now planted almost 90 trees. We are using it for visits by local groups and the neighbourhood on Open Days. Details of the project can be found www.cripleymeadow.org.uk We still have a few acres which we have just started reclaiming so are still busy trying to make more plots available but as aleways are looking for funding for the major jobs like fencing. Our The plots vary from small beds on communal plots for beginners to large plots suitable for feeding a family. Annual subscriptions range from £15 to £30 amd all members are expected to contribute to our working party programme. We hope to make space for as many members as possible so that they too can enjoy the benefits of working with the land; fresh produce and healthy exercise.
